VILLARS LES DOMBES
The “Parc des Oiseaux” hosts one of the most beautiful and colorful
collections of birds in Europe.
◊ Morning: Bourg-en-Bresse, a historical and gastronomic city. Discover old neighbourhoods in this ancient roman city,
attached to the Savoy kingdom during the middle ages and until the XVIth century when it became French. Its past is
evident by the presence of Medieval wooden houses and the Renaissance frontage of large private town houses. Built
at the beginning of the XVIth century by the order of Marguerite of Austria go inside to discover the secrets of this jewel
built from stone and marble in a flamboyant Gothic style. The “Monastère Royal de Brou” (cf. week 13), was classed
the favourite monument for the French in 2014, it is a proof of eternal love. Discover the princely tomb, its altarpiece, its
stone jubé, its cloisters as well as its rich art collection from the XVI to XXth century.
◊ Lunch: Gourmet pause in one of the restaurants of the park : traditional restaurant LA CARPE, self-service PELICAN

share a picnic in one of the areas at your disposal. Dombes Tourism proposes in collaboration with the farmers of
Dombes (cf. 2017 week 34), local picnic baskets with carp rillette, sausage, 2 cheeses, 2 fruits and a fruit juice or wine

◊ Afternoon: On your way back, stop to discover the : Abbey Notre Dame des Dombes au Plantay in a red brick construction
typical of this region. A real oasis of serenity, preserved in its grenery and its century old orchard. This Cistercien site,
built in the 19th century by the same architect as the Basilic Fourvière in Lyon.
A free visit gives access to the Abbey, the Thibirine chapel and its icon and to the shop at the entrance.
◊ Speciality “capital of gastronomy”: Fish from the Dombes.

◊ Tips: Commented pond fishing : From October to end of March, discover the unique and ancestral savoir-faire of pond
fishing in Dombes! From 8am to noon, appointments in front of tourist offices that will accompany you in this exploration.
